Acne scars - how to get rid of them

We have extensive experience treating acne scars, of all types in patients with all skin types. Having made a great effort to clear your skin of acne and keep it clear, itโ€™s understandable that you want to improve texture, tone, colour and complexion of your skin as much as possible.

Assessing your skin

Removal, or more realistically, improvement in the changes left by acne requires a good understanding of your skin and how itโ€™s been affected. Quite often, thereโ€™s a combination of changes that can be seen in your skin. This could be:

  • indented marks

  • elevated marks

  • redness - patchy or widespread

  • pitting โ€œice-pickโ€ marks

  • pigmented or dark areas of skin

Removing/improving scars - treatment methods

It is important to set yourself realistic goals. We can improve your skin significantly, but itโ€™s not possible return to the baby smooth skin of your early teens. There will always be some indication of the previous spots, but markedly better, less noticeable and more blended with the rest of your skin. Lighting makes a big difference to how noticeable the marks are, but we would hope to get your skin good enough to give you confidence in most light.

Lasers

Lasers can be an excellent approach to improve the skin surface. They can be used to elevated indented marks, or flatten raised marks or keloids. The choice of lasers includes Erbium:Glass or CO2 (carbon dioxide) to powerfully change the texture of your skin - your consultant can help guide you with this choice and you can look at the laser section of the website.

Chemical peels

Acid based peels, such as TCA are also an excellent method of improving the skin surface. The peels performed in a dermatology practice are typically much more potent and will require some recovery time and aftercare, which can be explained to you by your Skin55 consultant.

Subcission

Subcission is particularly useful at elevating indented areas using a fine surgical needs. The fibrous areas that are pulling the skin downwards are separated allowing the skin to rise up. With time, more collagen fills the indentation helping it smoothen.
